Understand the purpose of the inspection
An Electrical Installation Condition Report records the findings from inspection and testing of the agreed fixed installation. It helps identify matters requiring attention and provides information for planning work. It is not a promise that every appliance or inaccessible part of a building has been examined.
Agree the scope and access
Tell the electrician why you need the report and provide any previous records. Discuss access to rooms, electrical equipment and other relevant areas. Any agreed limitations should be understood before the inspection, because they affect what can be assessed.
Read the observations as well as the result
Ask the inspector to explain the findings and the recommended next steps. A repair, further investigation or improvement may be identified. Do not assume that an unsatisfactory outcome automatically means a complete rewire; the actual observations should guide the quotation for remedial work.
Keep a useful property record
Retain the complete report and documentation for subsequent work. Share these with the electrician when arranging later alterations or another inspection. If a new fault develops, seek advice promptly rather than treating the next inspection date as a reason to leave it unresolved.
