Recognise when to stop using the equipment

Visible scorching, smoke, a burning smell, electric shocks or damaged electrical equipment need prompt attention. Stop using the affected equipment and keep people away. Do not touch exposed parts or remove covers. If there is a fire or immediate danger, leave the property and call 999.

Describe the problem accurately

A tripping circuit and a flickering light can have different causes. An appliance, a fitting, a connection or the fixed installation may be involved. Avoid assuming that the whole house needs rewiring or that a new fuse box will solve it. Tell the electrician what happens, when it started and which parts of the property are affected.

When the power has gone off

Check whether neighbouring properties also appear to be affected without putting yourself at risk. A problem on the electricity network and a fault inside the property require different responses. Do not repeatedly reset a circuit that will not remain on. Contact the appropriate network operator for a wider supply issue, or discuss an internal fault with an electrician.

What to expect when you call

Provide your postcode, a contact number, the symptoms and any immediate access restrictions. We will confirm attendance availability and the call-out arrangements. The cause may need investigation before a repair can be priced. If further work is needed, agree its scope and charge before it proceeds.

Prevent repeated visits for an unclear fault

Keep a brief record of intermittent problems: the time, affected room and equipment in use. Photographs of visible damage can help if they can be taken safely. Share previous reports or details of recent building work. This gives the electrician a clearer starting point without asking you to investigate live electrical equipment.
